College of Applied Biology
Biology Professionals in B.C. are governed by the College of Applied Biology. The College of Applied Biology Act is the first legislation of its kind in North America, and is the first time applied biologists have been granted full professional status through self governing legislation. The College:
- awards titles of Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) and Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech)
- sets conduct and performance standards to which members are held accountable,
- ensures the competence of its members through compulsory rules for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), audits, investigations, discipline procedures and
- evaluates and comments on legislation pertinent to the purpose of the College from an apolitical perspective.
The Association of BC Forest Professionals
The Association of BC Forest Professionals is responsible for registering and regulating British Columbia’s professional foresters and forest technologists. Here in BC, the practice of professional forestry has been regulated since 1947 when foresters first agreed to help protect the public’s interest in the province’s forests in return for the exclusive right to practise forestry. Today, they are the largest professional forestry association in Canada and the first to include forest technologists.
Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of BC
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. regulates and governs the professions under the authority of the Engineers and Geoscientists Act by setting and maintaining high academic, experience and professional practice standards for all members. Individuals licensed by APEGBC are the only persons permitted by law to undertake, and assume responsibility for, engineering and geoscience projects in the province of B.C.
BC Institute of Agrologists
BCIA is the provincial organization authorized under the Agrologists Act, a British Columbia statute, to govern the professional conduct of its members, in support of the public interest. Persons who hold themselves out to be an agrologist must be duly registered with BCIA under the Act.
Agrology as defined by the Act means using agricultural and natural sciences and agricultural and resource economics, including collecting or analyzing data or carrying out research or assessments, to designing, evaluating, advising on, directing or otherwise providing professional support.
Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
As a professional Society and self-regulating body in Alberta, the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists is committed to the promotion of excellence in the practice of biology. Practitioners using the title Professional Biologist have completed a required level of education in their chosen field and may be confident that their colleagues have achieved the same level of competence.
The Society provides opportunities for its members to keep abreast of advances in knowledge in the field by organizing both symposia and in-house seminars on topics of importance to practitioners.
Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC
The purpose of the ASTTBC is to maintain, improve and increase the knowledge, ability and competence of technologists and technicians; to regulate the standards of training and practice of, and for, its members, and to protect the interests of the public.
Incorporated under the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians Act (ASTT Act) in 1985. Established in 1958 by technicians and technologists in the fields of engineering and architecture, ASTTBC has expanded to sixteen disciplines and nine special certifications in the broad field of applied science.
Certified Management Consultants of BC
The Institute of Certified Management Consultants of British Columbia, or CMC-BC, is a not-for-profit corporation under the Societies Act of British Columbia. In addition to its responsibilities relating to registration and certification of management consultants in British Columbia, CMC-BC also governs the designation and professional activities of the profession within its jurisdiction.
