Mentorship is defined as patronage, influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor, often, but not always, to someone less experienced. A good mentor can help to influence the personal and professional growth of the mentee. This relationship could be a simple one – a chat about a career change over a bowl of soup… a regular contact once a month to check in on career progress… a technical issue where the mentor provides assistance… an HR matter needing attention… there are no limits to the possibilities. And who knows, it could lead to a relationship that continues throughout your career.
The APB recognizes that not all mentorship happens in a formal setting. One might have a chat over a phone or virtual call, in person at the office, on the job site or other less formal arrangements. You may find an exchange or two will be of great assistance for any technical, administration, HR or leadership issue. A Mentor might be a friend, a teacher, a peer; virtually anyone willing to understand and assist with the needs, wants and values of the mentee. APB’s goal is to provide resources that will assist someone who will serve as a Mentor assisting a Mentee or Protégé. Through APB’s more formal program we will assist Mentors and Mentees to connect and work together.
The APB Peer to Peer section is currently under design is intended to serve as a resource to support and assist biology professionals as they build their professional skills, enhance career development and grow leadership, management and human resource abilities. It is framed for biology professionals who are at various stages in their professional and personal development. Whether you are a student or new graduate, someone who is early into their career, mid-stream or nearing retirement this new program is being designed to provide supports at all stages.
The aspects of this program are still under development so watch this space for more. Look for guides, video’s, CPD sessions on mentoring and other resources designed to assist both the Mentor and Mentee as you consider the value of engaging and processes by which you might engage.
Colloaboration with your peers is an essential part of ongoing support. The APB has a discord channel that is there to provide members the opportunity to share their knowledge and best practices.

APB created a ‘formal’ mentoring program to arrange connections between a mentor and mentee, track progress and reward various levels of achievement. While successful, the program has proved to be a bit too involved for today’s fast paced world.
In 2025 APB, with the assistance of funding from the Vancouver Foundation, launched a review and re-design of the program that allows more flexibility for mentors and mentees. This program is designed to help up-and-coming biologists acquire skills essential to future employment and career advancement.
We encourage members to give the new program a try. Sign up to be a Mentor or see how it suits your needs as a Mentee.
